Raft systems grow vegetables in a growbed without a grow medium – plants are usually started in rockwool before being placed in small “baskets” that rest on the raft above the deep reservoir. For gardeners seeking the highest yield, the Kijani Grows NFT garden uses a constant “trickle” of nutrient-rich water running through PVC to immerse the roots in a flavor-packed grow environment!
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is a method where plants are held in a pipe or gutter instead of a medium and the roots are allowed to grow freely throughout the pipe. A constant “film” or trickle of nutrient rich solution is continually passed through the pipe, before returning to the reservoir to be re-circulated. NFT allows for maximum nutrient uptake and available oxygen for the roots, producing the most yield of any aquaponic technique.
